A Tantot, Paris

A Tantot was a humerous illustrator, cards illustrated and published by him appeared with both his signature and a monogrammatic AT logo, see the first example. By 1911 the firm was being run by his widow and later a V was incorporated into the logo. During WW1 the firm published patriotic cards bearing the name A. Tantot on the address side with no logo.

Cards include illustrations by Xavier Sager and many more by Charles Naillod, typically of Sager-like ladies often in amusing situations. Some of the cards by Naillod have just the printed letters A.T. in place of the monogram logo.

The Chantecler card is a caricature by Sager of Edmond Rostand in whose play of that name all the actors wore bird costumes. This led to various fashion extravgances. The gist of the legend on the card is "At first people were just intrigued, but now you've excited the ladies!"
