E. RABUS, Paris

Founded in 1897. In the 1903 directory Rabus seems to have been a just a seller of cards, but in the 1914 directory as a publisher he lists the marques ER PARIS, LILAS, CIRCÉ, TRIOMPHE, etc. from office and shop at 108 Rue Amelot, Paris and with a factory at Raillet et Brincas, av. de Wagram, Nanterre. The Triomphe marque had been used earlier by J Coucier, see under the JC logo. Lilas cards also can have on the address side "Marque JC Paris", "Marque ER Paris" or neither.

In 1922 he lists marques ER Paris, SUBAR & SUPER. In 1928, marques ER Paris, SUPER, and PERFECT.

The ER on the back of the example PHB card indicates that it was at least printed by E Rabus, maybe published also by the firm. However it was always the case that some publishers had their cards printed by established firms. The EJR card also has ER on the back, and this is perhaps even more likely to be an ER publication. (There was a presumably different EJR, which produced crude and colourful cartoon cards.) In earlier times Rabus re-published some Aero cards with ER logo and the original logo defaced, see the Aero entry.

Rabus was active in the Chambre Syndicale français des Editeurs de la Carte postale illustrée (the actual title is even longer) and was its secretary-general in 1914 for example.
